THe world’s oldest winery visit
Jan Matthias Klein from Staffelter Hof is visiting us for a tasting on 26 March.
Meet Jan Matthias Klein – tenth generation winemaker at the world’s oldest winery still in operation. On 26 March, he will be visiting Kullabergs Vingård.
Since 862, Staffelter Hof has been making wine in Mosel, where tradition and passion meet in one of Germany’s most classic wine regions. That doesn’t stop them from challenging inherited traditions. Jan Matthias Klein has seen the consequences of climate change – and realised that somthing must be done. Now.
This evening, he will talk about the challenges of creating a vineyard for the future. Planting trees and resistant grape varieties, and thinking about sustainability at every stage.
We will taste both classic Rieslings and wines made from PIWI grapes, the same varieties we grow at Kullabergs Vingård. An excellent opportunity to discover something new and broaden you palette.
This is how Jan Matthias Klein presents his vineyard:
“The oldest winery in the world, constantly striving to improve our sustainability, having established Northern Europes biggest vitiforestry project to break the traditional monoculture with biodiversity, creating the vineyard of the future.”
In Mosel, Risling has long been king, but Staffelter Hof breaks the mould.
“Of course the focus in this project lies on farming robust PIWI varieties, which are the most suitable for battling the challenges of climate change and reducing the carbon foot print of a bottle of wine.”
Staffelter Hof is not only a pioneer in winegrowing. They also invest heavily in various cultural event on site to put the wine in context.
